Mr.Polly Umrigar.
One Of The Indian Test Match Captains.
Umrigar was born on 28 th March 1926 at Solapur, Maharashtra, India.
Umrigar played cricket as well as played foot ball & hockey.
Umrigar made 115* not out for combined universities toured West Indian in 1948.This gave him opening in the national attention. Umrigar only made 113 runs against England for the last 4 test match and he was dropped in the 5 th test. Unfortunately Mr.Hemu Adhikari was injured and Umrigar got a chance in 7 positions. Umrigar was once again proved that his capability and made 130* not out and India won their first test match against England.Umrigar was the First person to score double century (223) against New Zealand at Hyderabad in 1955-56.
Umrigar was made one of the Indian captains for unofficial test match against commonwealth XI in 1953-54.for matches & won in one match. During his captainship from 1956-59 three years he won continuously for eight test matches.
Umrigar occasionally bowled medium pace and started bowling at Bahawalpur in 19954-55.His carrier best was 6 for 74 against Pakistan.
In 1970 Umrigar was the touring Manager for Indian side to New Zealand, Australia, and West Indies. Umrigar was the Chairman of National Selection Committee from 1978 to 82.
Umrigar total score of 3631 test runs ; 12 century were the India‘s best till Mr.Gavaskar break the record in late 1970.
He was Executive Secretary of BCCI & Secretary of Mumbai Cricket Association.
Umrigar was awarded Padma Shri award in 1962.& C.K.Nayudu Trophy in 1998-99.
Under 15 championship is awarded in his name Polly Umrigar Trophy to honor his contribution to cricket.
Umrigar died in Mumbai on 7.11.2006.
